KABLAM!

Action League Now!'s Thundergirl, Meltman and Justice blast off.

KABLAM! isn't just the sound of exploding dynamite; it's also the name (and noise) of Nickelodeon's new Friday night show, which starts October 11 at 8 PM*.

KABLAM! is a half-hour cartoon variety show hosted by two wisecracking cartoon kids named Henry and June. The show crams at least five cartoons into each episode. Plus, KABLAM! looks totally different from other shows because it mixes all kinds of animation.

Here's a look at some of the cartoons that go KABLAM!

HENRY AND JUNE

Starring: Henry and June

What it's about: Henry and June are best friends who live inside a comic book. They pop up a few times each episode - letting their imaginations run wild, dreaming up nutty situations, and introducing the other KABLAM! segments.

Get used to hearing: "Kablammy" and "Kablammerific" to describe anything that's good or funny.

How it's done: Computer animation: The pictures are hand-drawn and then animated using computers.

SNIZ AND FONDUE

Starring: Sniz, Fondue, Bianca, and Snuppa

What it's about: Sniz and Fondue are two wacky cats who get into a lot of trouble. Sniz, who's smaller (and louder), drags the nervous Fondue into the thick of things.

Get used to hearing: "Cut me an over-sized wedge!" which is Sniz and Fondue's way of saying "Give me a break!" When Sniz is very excited, he says, "Snap me down!"

How it's done: Cel animation. Several slightly different character drawings are made on celluloid (clear plastic sheets). One at a time, the drawings (or cels) are placed on a background drawing and then photographed. When all those photos are run in order, it looks like the character is moving. Cel animation is used to make many cartoons, including Rugrats.

ACTION LEAGUE NOW!

Starring: Thundergirl, Meltman, The Chief, The Flesh, Stinky Diver, Justice, and The Mayor

What it's about: A motley crew of action figures clumsily tries to make the world a better place.

Get used to hearing: "Ouchies!" after The Flesh has been crushed. The Chief yells "Blast it!" when he's in fear of being blown up.

How it's done: CHUCKIMATION and stop-action. CHUCKIMATION is pretty low-tech. To make the characters look like they're flying, people off-camera throw (or chuck) the action figures into the camera frame.

In stop-action animation, 3-D objects (such as the action figures) are photographed each time they are moved. When all those photographs are seen in rapid succession, the figures look like they're moving on their own. James and the Giant Peach was filmed using stop-action.

What is the worst Halloween costume you have ever worn?

When I started working for Nickelodeon, I went to a party as the color orange. All my clothes - including my socks and shoes - were orange. I even painted my hands, neck, face, and ears with orange greasepaint. And when I got home, I tried to wash the paint off, but my ears stayed orange. They looked like they were radioactive. It took about a week for me to get all the paint off.

What was your favorite candy as a kid?

Sweetarts were my favorite candy until I was about nine years old. One day I bought a giant Sweetart. I ate about half of it and couldn't eat any more. The other half sat in the fridge for almost a year, until it was finally thrown away. That Sweetart conquered me.

MM: Not too far. The farthest we ever went was the Vince Lombardi rest stop on the New Jersey Turnpike.

NM: What's the weirdest thing you've ever found in your dressing room?

Larisa Oleynik: If I don't have school, then I usually just come home and watch TV or read. And sometimes I go swimming.

NM: Do you ever take afternoon naps?

LO: Oh yeah, all the time. Sometimes I eat lunch in about five minutes, and then I'll go into my dressing room and take a nap on the couch.

NM: Who decides when you can get a haircut?

LO: I have to ask the producers if I want to change anything about my appearance. I just cut my hair about three inches. I wanted to cut it more, but the producers wouldn't let me. Now, I want to get my ears pierced. I'm talking to them about it.

NM: What are your favorite Nickelodeon shows?

LO: I watch All That right after Alex Mack because I know all the kids. They're just as hilarious in real life as they are on the show - maybe even more so. I watch Rugrats, too.

NM: What Nickelodeon character are you most like?

LO: I'm a combination of Alex and Clarissa. The part of me that's like Clarissa is the part of me that loves to be different and isn't afraid to express herself. The part of me that's like Alex is a little more reserved.

Melissa Joan Hart: I'm hardly ever home, but if I am, I like to watch old movies and clean my room.

MJH: I like Rugrats. I like the way the animation is seen from a kid's point of view. Everything is really low to the ground.

NM: How did you memorize your lines for Clarissa Explains It All?

MJH: I would memorize scripts half at a time. I'd learn about twenty-five pages on Wednesday nights and about twenty-five pages on Thursday nights. But, of course, it had to be after [Beverly Hills] 90210.

NM: If you could play any other Nickelodeon character, who would it be and why?

MJH: I'd like to be Stimpy because he's cute, innocent, and lovable. And sometimes he's an idiot.

What are you favorite sports teams?

I'm a die-hard New York sports fan, probably because I've lived in New York my whole life. I like the Mets for baseball and the Knicks for basketball.

What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject was history. In college, I studied history and English. I know so much history that when I watch Jeopardy!, I can answer many of the questions. I like being able to do that.

Do you like to talk on the phone?

I'd rather talk in person. I like to see how people react to what I'm saying. When I was a kid, I never really called anyone except girls and whenever I did, I would get nervous. That's probably why I don't like talking on the phone.

Do you have a nickname?

Not really. Some people call me Herbie. When I was a kid, I had a couple of nicknames. For about a month, my brother teased me and called me Egbert, after a character in a W.C. Fields movie.

What were you like as a kid?

I was tall and skinny, and I tried lot of different things to put on weight. I used to have a powdered breakfast drink with every meal. I also kept a checklist on the refrigerator to record all the food I ate. But I never succeeded in gaining weight.

What sports do you play?

I play touch football, baseball, and basketball. I like baseball and basketball the best. And in high school, I played lacrosse.

Brand-new episodes of The Secret World of Alex Mack begin at the end of August during SNICK. But don't get too comfy watching Alex Mack on Saturdays. Starting October 8th, the show will move to Tuesdays and Thursdays. That's because Nickelodeon gets to stay up an extra half hour - until 8:30pm - every weeknight. Whitney Houston hosts Nickelodeon's 9th Annual Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday, May 11.* NICKELODEON MAGAZINE spoke with Whitney about singing, stage fright, and sandwiches.

Nickelodeon Magazine: How old were you when you knew you wanted to become a professional singer?

Whitney Houston: I was about twelve or thirteen. I'd been singing in church since I was five years old, so it was always something I did. My mother was a professional singer, and she guided me after I decided this was what I was going to do.

NM: What was the first song you learned to sing?

WH: A gospel song, "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah."

NM: Have you ever forgotten the words to a song during a concert?

WH: Yes.

NM: What does that feel like?

WH: You just feel kind of silly. I add some aahhs and ummms to cover it.

NM: Have you ever had stage fright?

WH: Yes. The first time I had it, I was about fourteen. I was performing with my mother in New York City, at a place called Alice Tully Hall. It was the first time I was performing in front of a large crowd of people, and I got so scared I almost went to the bathroom on myself.

NM: When you are performing, what do you look at or do you just zone out?

WH: People.

NM: When people leave a concert, they often say that the singer looked right at them.

WH: Yeah, sometimes we do. I can see the first four rows, but after the fifth and sixth, it starts to get dim.

NM: Do you sing in the shower?

WH: Yes.

NM: Where do you keep your awards?

WH: In a large case in the basement.

NM: What was the first award you won?

WH: I was in an all-state talent competition when I was in seventh grade. I came in second. It's funny because the winner sang "The Greatest Love of All." I sang "Evergreen."

NM: Where did you grow up?

WH: I was born in Newark, New Jersey, and I grew up there and in East Orange, New Jersey. And I still live in New Jersey.

NM: Do you have any sisters or brothers?

WH: I have two older brothers.

NM: Was it tough being a little sister?

WH: Yes!

NM: Do your big brothers still pick on you?

WH: Yeah, sometimes.

NM: What's the worst outfit you wore as a kid?

WH: A purple chiffon gown with a white organza top. I was sixteen years old.

NM: What were your favorite clothes as a kid?

WH: Blue jeans and sneakers.

NM: Did you have a nickname as a kid?

WH: Nippy. My father gave me that name. I don't know why. He said he liked the name. People close to me still call me that.

NM: Did you have any heroes as a kid?

WH: My parents. I had great parents. They made themselves examples for me and my brothers.

NM: How many people tour with you?

WH: About 120, including the band members, dancers, wardrobe people, and hairstylists.

NM: Do you travel by bus when you're on tour?

WH: Yes. I love the bus. It has a place to cook food and a little bunk bed. It's not fancy, just convenient.

NM: Do you ever get bus-sick?

WH: No.

NM: Now that you're famous, what can you do that you couldn't do before?

WH: Get into places without waiting.

NM: If there were a Whitney Houston sandwich, what would it be?

WH: Peanut butter and jelly. I love peanut butter and jelly. On wholewheat bread. It's quick. It's tasty. With a glass of milk-mmm, great.

NM: Do you eat all your vegetables?

WH: Not all the time. I love asparagus. I love spinach. I love greens and kale.

NM: If you could be any animal, which would you choose?

WH: A bird. I love doves. I'd like to fly.

NM: What music groups did you listen to as a kid?

WH: Earth, Wind, and Fire, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and the Jackson 5.

NM: What did your parents think of the music you listened to when you were a kid?

WH: We all liked the same music, but not always at the same volume.

Nickelodeon Magazine: How can kids get better at doing voices?

Jess Harnell: Imitate everyone. Imitate your brothers, imitate your aunts, imitate people on TV. Even if your imitation isn't good, then you've just invented a new voice. But I always tell kids that whatever their talent is-whether it's voices or drawing or anything-they have to practice.

NM: As a kid, did you think you'd get paid to make voices?
JH: I had a feeling I would. I always did voices. When I was twelve, I saw a behind-the-scenes taping of a cartoon. I remember watching the actors do their parts.

NM: Do you recommend your line of work to kids?
JH: Absolutely. Rob Paulsen [the voice of Yakko] says that we're getting paid to do the stuff that used to get us in trouble at school.

Dot's All
Tress MacNeille is the voice of Dot.

Nickelodeon Magazine: Are you anything like Dot?
Tress MacNeille: Very much. I'm adorable and assertive. I sometimes lose my temper. I understand Dot because I know girls need to speak up and make their wishes known.

NM: Is Dot the cutest character you've ever played?
TM:  Female cartoon characters usually are adorable. Either that or they're evil. But Dot is absolutely the cutest. She's smart, too.

NM: Is her voice based on anyone you know?
TM: Not really. I was shown a drawing of Dot. So the voice had to be right for someone small and cute in a flounced skirt.

NM: Will Dot ever catch Mel Gibson?
TM: She has hopes. But it's all about the chase. Once he's caught, she might get bored.

NM: When you were a kid, did you ever imagine you'd be doing this for a living?
TM: I wanted to very much, ever since I was about ten. I've realized my life's ambition.

NM: Did you have brothers like Yakko and Wakko?
TM: Yes, I had five brothers and two sisters, and there was a lot of yakkin' and a lot of wackiness.
